“The sea is the third character”: director Wren Coley on The Isle of Tides

When The Isle of Tides premiered two years ago, its final image — a kitchen slowly flooding under a projected tide — became one of the most talked-about stage moments of the season.

“People assume the play is about the buyout,” says director Wren Coley. “It's really about what a family does when the ground under an argument keeps moving. The sea is the third character in every scene.”

The re-run keeps the original cast and adds a redesigned surround-sound foley score. “We record real water every night, live. It's never the same show twice.”

The Isle of Tides runs for four performances at the Bluma Appel Theatre in Toronto.
